Mount Sherman – 4AM Summit – Colorado 14er

We set out with the intention of camping below the peak to scale and summit Mt. Sherman early Memorial Day.

Early became an understatement when we arrived at the base around 2AM and decided to go for it – summiting just after 4AM!

The wind was intense, we completely lost the trail on the way up and down, but conditions were probably as good as it gets for this time of year.

Ive summited lots of 14ers here in colorado friends, been doing it since 1970, and iVe not heard of anyone who is serious and reasponsible doing an assault at 2 am, losing the trail, bagging the summit at 4am and heading back down in the dark and losing the trail again going down. Believe me please, I'm a voice with experience, and what happened there was a good way to get people lost and hurt.

Leave the heroics and stunt work to professionals and keep people safe by starting the trail at a reasonable hour, just before sunup is perfect for most of the 14ers in CO, unless that is, everybody is still stoned or tipsy from partying all night. Then it would be best and safest to hit the trail another day, when you all are straight and sober! Been there and done it all, survived it too, I must tell you the truth, though we both know you'll do whatever you want anyways! Its not safe to hike or climbed high on anything! You might all get away with it a few time. But someday somebody is not going to survive the thing because of an unknown heart condition or something! Thats a rough way to learn this easy lesson! dusty in CO

Dusty is rightfully concerned.

We just felt ballsy enough to tackle it when we got there knowing the conditions were favorable as they'd every be for a night hike.

Probably a little dumb but we're not completely inexperienced, just full of gusto

But I bet you we're the only people in the log that signed that book in the middle of the night and probably only a handful have ever done that. You're right, we're totally crazy, but it sounds like you are too Dusty
