Written Wednesday this week is based off the quote from T. Harv Eker, “How you do anything is how you do EVERYthing!”

At first I thought this quote made a lot of sense, but not complete sense. I felt like there were things in life that you might do half-assed and then your passions which you might be engaging in at 100% As I started examining my own life I realized that this was far from the case.

One of the first things I noticed was that when I’m at work (helping run the family biz) I am not moving at “full speed.” As a matter of fact I can be rather sluggish and unmotivated. So where else does this show up in my life?

Everyday I’m on the internet doing posts for InspirACTION or interacting with people on social media. That same sluggishness carries over into my greater work even as I’m walking through the doorway of my home and switching hats. It takes me a long time to get back to people and keep up on things.

Another example: I do the minimum work required in most cases to “get the job done.” Examining my life, I realize I do this at school, I do this when I’m cleaning my room, and just about every single one of my blog posts – the SEO, tags, descriptions and all the “little stuff” doesn’t get done.

All of the examples I can think of relate to your state or attitude. The actions and decisions that result from them are important to realize, but understanding where they come from is far more important.

So at this point, you might be thinking to yourself, “Oh yea, well I can go hard in my business and lounge around the rest of my time.” Let me explain to you why this is possible, but completely unsustainable. Take any number of metaphors, starting an engine, beginning a race, or picking up where you left off. It’s certainly true, you can start the race and get movin’ quick, but how much more energy does it take to start moving than to keep moving? The momentum of your energy is everything. Putting in the little bit of extra effort to keep pace at a higher energy is far less than having to rev that engine up each time you need to get going.

It’s also important to remember to flex your energy. Think about working out. You have to push your body to new limits long before you reach them. You don’t just “get pumped,” or “get motivated,” one day and double your max bench press. The same is true with your energy. If you think you’re suddenly going to get off our ass and do this amazing stuff, it won’t matter because at work you’ve been slacking off like crazy.

Remember, how you do the “little things” is how you’re going to do the “big things” too. Put more energy into your work, it will be reflected in all things. If you can’t operate with big energy doing the little things how could you ever expect to have the even bigger energy to engage at 100% with the “bigger things?”

Your decisions and actions are reflective of your state and attitude. Watch and learn from yourself how your behavior in life might be a bit less compartmentalized than you’d initially thought. If you can really start hammering down the little things, big things will happen.
